Dance Workshop

Join us for a triple threat dance workshop! In this four-hour masterclass, you'll have the opportunity to work with three of Charlotte's top choreographers on three dance styles:

  • Tap with Sharlie Duncan

  • Jazz with Kyle Shawell

  • Cabaret Choreography with Becky Timms.

For performers of all levels and experience, age 15 and up.

About the instructors:

Sharlie Duncan is originally from London, England and moved to the US in 2012. At the young age of 11, Sharlie won a scholarship to study full time at the prestigious Elmhurst Ballet School in England and upon graduating, continued her studies in Musical Theatre and Contemporary Dance. Sharlie has toured and performed extensively in Europe, Asia and the US in a diverse collection of shows. Credits include, Fame (European tour) The Royal Opera’s La Traviata (West End and Japan). Sharlie also toured with Spirit Of The Dance for many years performing a variety of their shows worldwide. Sharlie has danced with The Carolina Opry, Kinetic Works and SCDP here in NC and continues to teach and choreograph here in the Carolinas. Most recent choreography credits include, Alice by Heart (Theatre Charlotte), Death Takes A Holiday (Post Mortem Players) Tuck Everlasting (LNHS).

Kyle Garrison Shawell is a versatile artist whose talents span choreography, performance, and dance education with a distinguished educational background from institutions like the University of Arts, Theatre West Virginia, and the Philadelphia School of Dance Arts. Kyle began his formal training under the direction of renowned teachers such as Milton Myers, Ronen Koresh, and Ruth Adrien. He received his BA from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, concentrating on Performance, Choreography, and Theory. He serves on the faculty of Open Door Studios and Charlotte Ballet, where he imparts his expertise to the next generation of dancers, enriching the curriculum with his diverse movement style. Kyle's choreographic prowess extends across jazz, musical theatre, contemporary dance, and Modern (Horton Technique), with notable contributions to productions like Once on This Island, The Wiz: The Golden Road, and, most recently, Annie at Children's Theater of Charlotte. Beyond the stage, Kyle is a dedicated educator, sharing his passion for dance as a guest teaching artist across North and South Carolina. His commitment to education is further exemplified by his pursuit of a Master of Arts in Dance Education at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, and his recent recognition as an A+ Fellow for North Carolina Schools/North Carolina Arts Council solidifies his status as a leader in the dance community.

Becky Timms has been literally dancing her whole life. From a very early age she knew that dance and theatre had her heart. She graduated from Point Park University, magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance. She continued her training (as all good dancers should) after college and studied at the Joffrey Ballet and San Francisco ballet schools as well as with the great Finis Jung and David Howard. She has taught all around the country including the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School in New York City and the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School. Becky has extensive professional experience on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and National Tours and has worked with some of professional theatres’ finest legendary directors and choreographers. She has worked with such legends as Jerome Robbins, Harold Prince, Michael Bennet, Bob Fosse, Susan Stroman, and Trevor Nunn to name a few. Becky has directed and choreographed more than 70 productions for professional theatres all over the country: La Jolla Playhouse, NJ Shakespeare, The Cort, and MTC, among others. In addition, she was the associate choreographer for the Tony Award winning show Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2002. Becky performed on Broadway / National tours of Cats, Chess, West Side Story, Pippin, Showboat, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat (starring Donny Osmond) as well as dozens of Equity regional theatres around the country.
