ABOUT NEXT TO NORMAL

From the outside, they’re just a normal family. But inside, it’s anything but. In this 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winner, a suburban household copes with crisis and the unpredictability of a mother's worsening bipolar disorder. Using wry humor, brutal honesty, and a powerful Tony Award-winning contemporary rock score, Next to Normal deals with how far two parents will go to keep their family’s world intact. Nothing has to be perfect, just Next to Normal.

AVAILABLE ROLES FOR NEXT TO NORMAL

*Actors need not be the age of the characters listed and should be able to play within the range. Theatre Charlotte is interested in casting a family that represents our community and roles are open to any ethnicity.

Diana (female presenting, age range 25-45, a Soprano): Diana is a sexy and sharp housewife at the center of the story. While it seems like she has it all, she suffers from bipolar disorder which keeps her from living her life to the fullest.

Dan (male presenting, age range 25-45, a Baritone/Tenor): Dan is the husband of Diana and father of Gabe and Natalie.  He wants nothing more than for his family to be normal and is protective, worried and stressed. He can be selfish and passive aggressive.  He does his best to keep his household together.

Natalie (female presenting, age range 16-25, a Soprano or High Alto): Natalie is a teenage girl trying to find herself. She is the daughter of Diana and Dan and struggles with knowing how to deal with the emotional roller coaster that is her life.

Gabe (male presenting, age range 16-25, a Tenor): Gabe is daring and rebellious and often comes across as rude. The only person he has a real affection for is his mother, Diana.

Henry (male presenting, age range 16-25, a Baritone with some Tenor): Henry is a 17 year old musician who is very interested in Natalie, perhaps even in love with her.

Dr. Madden (male presenting, age range 20-40s, Baritone/Tenor): Dr. Madden is Diana’s primary physician and tries to reach her through a variety of treatments. He is fairly easy going and assumes other character traits in Diana’s mind.
